Without memory, there can be no retribution.
Saturday night Sparky and I decided to watch Popcorn on good ole Netflix. I had only seen it once when I was younger, so I didn't remember anything about the film. For some reason I thought it was much older than it is, like early 80's or late 70's. Shows how long it had been since I'd watched it. All I knew was there's a killer who makes masks out of his victim's skin, very Texas Chainsaw-ish. That and the popularity of this movie among horror fans means it is definitely a must see.

The movie starts with our main character, Maggie. She's waking up from yet another strange dream, which she keeps track of with a recorder. The dreams are always about the same man, and she can't figure out the significance behind this. Meanwhile, Maggie's friends in the cinema club are planning an all-night film festival at the old Dreamland theater, in order to raise some money. They decide to show several (fictional) horror films from the 1950's that rely on 3D, Odorama, and buzzers in the seats.
While the audience is having a blast, members of the cinema club are being murdered behind the scenes. All to reveal an unexpected killer and way too complicated plot. Apparently the man in Maggie's dreams is her father, whom she suspected to be the murderer. Turns out she was wrong, the killer is Toby, a man who is severely burned all over his body, due to a fire in the theater that was caused by Maggie's aunt, who she believed to be her mother? Told you it was confusing. Basically, Toby is pissed off and out for revenge and has plans to kill "Sarah", as he calls her, by recreating a death scene in her father's movie from 15 years ago.
Popcorn is your typical cheesy horror flick, with cliche characters, even having the moron of the group saving the day. But all in all, I really enjoyed this one. Watching it made me wish theaters still entertained and interacted with the audience as they did back in the old days. It was a fun little slasher film and I had quite a few laughs. Being as this movie is rare, and I'm not sure when it will be out on dvd, I don't know when I will be able to purchase it. But it's definitely on my must-have list and I recommend you check it out if you haven't seen it yet.
