Summary: Mitsuki Kanzaki just gained an older brother when her mother remarried. She's not sure how to approach the change in her life, especially when both her mother, and new father, go on a lengthy business trip and leave the two alone. However, her adjustment period gets completely derailed when she runs into an angel who's sole goal is to get Mitsuki to fall in love and have sex with her new brother.
Review
Plot: The story of
ImoCho (short for
Saikin, Imoto no Yosu ga Chotto Okashiin Da Ga, the Japanese title of the show) is very straightforward. Hiyori, the angel, passed away before her time, and the only memory she has is that she loved her big brother, Yuya. To move on and go to heaven, Hiyori needs to live out her greatest desire - to become Yuya's lover, and has decided to use Mitsuki to do so. Mitsuki isn't too fond of this idea, but has no way to get rid of the bright, cheerful, and pushy angel who can posses her at random times. The show is a comedy that is based on Hiyori's desire, Mitsuki's reluctance, Yuya's idiocy and kindness, and Yukina's (Yuya's childhood friend) presence. It's a generic romantic comedy plot with a supernatural (and semi-incest-based) twist. However, it doesn't really stand out. The haunted by an angel concept creates some interesting plot situations, but generally this show evolves exactly how the viewer will expect, including the open-ended finish that ended exactly how I anticipated.
Characters: The four lead characters are very simplistic, with Mitsuki being the only one with any complexity. Mitsuki is conflicted about how she should feel about having a new family. She wants to be happy for her mother and the change in their lives (for the better), but also has trouble adjusting. She comes across as sullen at times. Hiyori's imposition on her life forces Mitsuki to reevaluate her emotions, not always in ways Mitsuki is comfortable with due to Hiyori's focus on physical 'heart-thumping' activity. Hiyori is a generic anime fun-loving girl, with the small caveat that she's dead, and will occasionally be depressed about that. Yuya is a generic kind and dumb harem lead with the added trait of wanting to be a good big brother. He always jumps to wrong conclusions (in ways that rarely make sense), is quick to impose his view of said conclusions on others (such as when he informs Mitsuki that her lesbian relationship with Hiyori is okay, despite no such relationship existing), and has no comprehension about the feelings of those around him (such as Yukina's obvious feelings for him). Yukina is a former tomboy who changed herself to be more feminine so Yuya would see her as a woman and not just a friend. She's a generic older sister/childhood friend anime character. Though there are other characters, they exist for the sole purpose of moving the plot, or creating slapstick comedy.
Presentation: The animation style is mostly good, but there are some random scenes where it seems like an animator forgot or ran out of time. There's no specific instances to point out, just in general. Like... a characters eyes won't look right, or Hiyori's wings occasionally weren't the same size from one scene to the next. It didn't detract from my enjoyment of the show, but it was apparent enough to notice. The music is simple and fits the series, as do the opening and ending animations and themes. It consisted of general themes that one would expect in an ecchi comedy anime. So, it continues the theme of fitting, but not being special.
Entertainment Value: The key to entertainment here is the comedy. Though Mitsuki is an interesting character, the plot doesn't allow her to carry the show without the comedy. It's a mix. Some comedy is situation or character based, and has long set ups to the punch lines. Others are as simple as a tsundere little sister hitting her brother in the head (two of the side characters). In the first two episodes, there are quite a few urine jokes. I am happy to say such jokes cease in episode three or four, almost as if the writers, or original author, thought better of the idea. The comedy isn't bad, but with such a bland cast outside of Mitsuki, it's hard to see someone who doesn't regualry watch this type of anime enjoying it.
Rating: 5/10 - The definition of a show for a target audience - it is perfect for fans of ecchi romantic comedy, especially those who prefer imouto (little sister) characters.
Recently, My Sister is Unusual - 12 episodes
Note: Recently, My Sister is Unusual is based on the manga by Mari Matsuzawa that ran for six years and finished with 11 volumes. The series originally aired in 2014, and is licensed in North America by Discotek Media (in Japanese with English subs). There is an ongoing light novel series by Kougetsu Mikazuki based on the manga, with illustrations by the original creator, an OVA, and a live action film. I watched the show in HD on Crunchyroll.
