A stuffy nose teaches you a lot of things. Like, you now are more grateful about a non-stuffy nose. You now appreciate the fact that both the nostrils functioning is a huge boon in itself. Yes, that’s what a stuffy nose can do. It is uncomfortable as hell, and you wouldn’t wish this even on your enemy. Thankfully, you don’t have to suffer from that stuffy or (and) a runny nose eternally. There’s something that can be done to fix the insides of your nostrils. Here are 6 things you could do to rid yourself of this grave inconvenience.

There are two ways you can allow steam to clear your nasal passages. One, by directly inhaling the vapors from a bowl of hot water. Two, by switching the hot water in your shower on and sitting inside till the steam cleans the mess accumulated in the passages. To enhance the effectiveness of steam, you could add few cloves of garlic before boiling the water. Remember to stay at least 30 cm away when inhaling steam from a bowl or bucket. Sitting in the shower with the vapors of hot water filling the room is a better way of dealing with a stuffy nose. You can do this 2 to 4 times a day for quicker relief.

2. Massaging With Wash Cloth

Dip a wash cloth in hot water and remove all the excess water. See to it that the water is not dripping from the napkin. By doing so, you allow the cloth to be hot for a longer time. Now, pat this warm wash cloth all over your face with a specific focus on the bridge of the nose, on the upper part of the cheeks, around the eyes, and in between the eyebrows. This will cleanse the sinuses and nasal passages making it easy for you to breathe. The heat from the washcloth liquefies the mucus inside the sinuses. You can now blow the nose easily to get rid of the accumulated debris.

3. Inhaling The Aroma Of Essential Oils

Best essential oils that you could use to relieve nasal congestion are peppermint oil, thyme oil, rosemary oil, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, and lemon oil. There are multiple ways in which you can use essential oils to treat a stuffy nose. Add few drops of any of the above mentioned essential oils in the humidifier, diffuser, or in the water, you’d use for the shower. You could go ahead and massage the sinuses around the eyes, the nasal bridge, and the forehead with these essential oils for instant relief. The antibacterial, antiviral, and anti inflammatory properties of the essential oils aid in relieving you of the stuffy nose.

4. Massaging Pressure Points

Start with pinching your eyebrows gently. Make sure you concentrate on the inner eyebrows where the bridge of the nose meets the eyebrows. Also, the base of the nose is one of the points you can massage to clear the blocked nasal passages. Another point that you must apply pressure on to decongest your stuffy nose is below the eye towards the outer edge. Using the right amount of pressure on these points will stimulate those parts thereby helping removal of the virus from the system.

The practice of using Neti Pots for nasal irrigation can be traced back to very ancient days where Yogis postulated that using saline water to irrigate the nasal passages can be beneficial for various reasons, decongesting stuffy nasal passages being one. Shoving salt water up your nose might seem like a crazy idea and in fact, unsafe too. But here’s what research says – These nasal rinse devices — which include bulb syringes, squeeze bottles, and battery-operated pulsed water devices — are usually safe and effective products when used and cleaned properly (1). Choose whichever device you want to but make sure you clean the equipment with distilled water. Also, make sure the nasal rinse you use is sufficiently purified to avoid unwanted microbes settling down in your nasal passage. Do not forget to learn the right technique of using the neti pot just to make sure you avoid unnecessary infections.

A stuffy or a runny nose can suck the life out of you, and the worst part is that it takes forever to come back to normalcy if you don’t actively do something about it. Take this as an opportunity and indulge in therapeutic activities with warm water, essential oils, hot soups, and some relaxing exercising sessions. Even if it is an allergy bothering you, all these tips will make it easier for you to survive the attack. Do you have any more tips up your sleeve that you swear by to get relief from this problem?
