Song Review: In the COVID-Era, Nick Jonas Feels Like a "Spaceman", Alone and In the Dark on New Solo Single

Following the initial disbandment of the Jonas Brothers in 2013, youngest of the trio Nick Jonas, quickly carved out a successful solo career for himself.

The artist's self-titled sophomore album in 2014 spawned "Jealous", his highest charting solo single to date. Follow-up album Last Year Was Complicated rolled out only two singles, including Tove Lo collaboration "Close".

Just as a fourth solo album appeared to be on the horizon, after stellar singles such as "Remember I Told You", "Find You" and "Right Now" failed to make a chart impact, the Jonas Brothers suddenly regrouped. The trio released their third number one album Happiness Begins in 2019, alongside three new Top 40 singles, juggernaut "Sucker" included.

Given the successful one-off releases of "What A Man Gotta Do" and "X", an official sixth studio album by the Jonas Brothers seemed likely. Younger brother Nick appears to have squashed those plans... for now.

Instead, Nick shares lead single "Spaceman" from his own fourth studio album of the same name.

Serving as a love letter to wife Priyanka Chopra, Nick cleverly references the 2020 election and difficulty living through the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Though days often seem bleak, "Spaceman" signals the artist's desire to push forward.

"And the numbers are high but we keep goin' down, 'cause we ain't supposed to live with nobody around, I'm a spaceman," he croons on the hook.

From the sparse beats on the intro to lyrics of social distancing and mask wearing, the concept of disconnectedness weaves through the new release, even seeping into and causing problems in his marriage. Even when the couple are at odds with each other, when his sweet words might not make an impact, Nick ensures he will always make it back home.

"Spaceman" is effective in its honesty and optimism. As Nick reflects on the past year, referencing the current state of the world and its low points, the song is meant to link the common thread between all listeners. We've all felt alone, we've all resorted to the bottle to cope, we've all hoped for a quick return to normalcy. Nick included.

With trademark sultry, comforting and commanding vocals at the forefront, the new single explores the concept of distance, one of the four central themes that make up Nick's upcoming fourth album. While we all stay safe at home, working to adjust to the new normal, Nick assures it's okay to feel lost in space at times, better days are always on the horizon.
