"Life Goes On" by Fergie - Single Review

Music will heal the world eventually.

As we deal with the outcome of a recent presidential election, the outspoken and former Black Eyed Peas lead songstress Fergie pushes forward with the promotion of her long-awaited, often-delayed sophomore solo album Double Dutchess. After viral hit "M.I.L.F. $" made a large initial splash but ultimately stalled in the lower half of the charts, the artist seems to be dramatically switching gears in terms of sound and tone. The recently released "Life Goes On" will immediately transport listeners and fans back to 2006.

"Life Goes On" latches on to a tranquil, tropical-pop vibe, reminiscent of Fergie's previous smash "Big Girls Don't Cry". With heartfelt appeal and an acoustic, instrumentally-driven beat that then transforms into a subtle EDM-influenced production, the artist contemplates the daily uncertainty that comes with the end of a relationship. Though there may be a mix of frustration and sadness buried within the lyrical content, in the end, it's all about seeing the beauty in life around.

Fergie's delicate vocal performance on the calm, collective verses is a vast departure from the aggressive, rap-like approach she took on her previous single. However, the new release is just as complex and impressive. From the Top 40-friendly nature of the appealing chorus to the rap delivery on the bridge, all components come together in a way only Fergie knows how to achieve. "Life goes on with or without you, damn it baby, what you’re gonna do?, you could go or you could stay, but who cares anyway?," she hesitantly sings.

As we all wait patiently for a brand new album, Fergie proves with "Life Goes On" and its predecessors that the upcoming collection of tracks will take inspiration from all over the creativity board. There may not be any of the fearless attitude and sass we've come to expect from the artist, instead replaced with endearing sentiment and a hand stretched out to the heartbroken and scared, but it's a strength she has commanded many times in the past.

From the comforting "da-da-das" on the intro to the effortless flow featured on the bridge, "Life Goes On" has the potential of resonating with many listeners, reminding audiences of the dominating chart power Fergie had a decade ago, and igniting adult contemporary pop radio airwaves. As we face fear and uncertainty, let the voice of Fergie guide you ahead, while remembering that no matter what, life will continue. We are all just waiting for our encore.
